Handheld aviation radios use VHF frequencies in the 108-137 MHz range. VHF channels differ from those used on land in that they are specifically tailored for use in avionics. Avionic handheld radio components perform at their good in open spaces with clear lines of sight. Because transmissions often travel between the ground and high altitudes, range must be far greater than land-based radios. Avionics radios are divided into COM and NAV channels. COM channels use the higher end of the signal band and are programmed specifically for voiceover communication. NAV channels use the lower end of a band and operate within the frequencies of 108 MHz and 117.95 MHz. In addition to COM and NAV channels, VHF avionics radios usually support NOAA marine weather channels, NOAA weather alerts, and include an emergency communication frequency at 121.5 MHz.
