Defense Products on Display at South American Airshow

Aerospace manufacturers from all around the world gathered at an airshow in Chile to observe the latest and greatest defense products. South American aircraft parts suppliers had displays and exhibits all around for the Fidae 2016 International Air & Space Fair near the capital of Chile. The event is held every other year, and has attracted numbers that exceed six-hundred exhibitors and up to 45,000 trade visitors in conventions past.

Big name manufacturers such as Saab were in attendance, interested in expanding their influence in the continent after being awarded a contract in Brazil a few years ago. Starting sometime in 2019, they are set to deliver thirty-six of their Gripen E multi-role fighter out of their factory in Sweden.

“This year Fidae is the major exhibition for the aerospace and defense industry in Latin America and an event of great strategic importance for Saab,” officials at the company said. “The region is a dynamic market where Saab sees great opportunities across all of its domains.”

Embraer will put on the finishing touches to the manufacturing process for Saab’s Gripens that are going to Brazil.

Other representatives from top manufacturers in attendance included Airbus Defense & Space, Bell Helicopter, Boeing, Finmeccanica, General Atomics, Lockheed Martin, and Lockheed/Sikorsky Aircraft. Some of the events that took place were flight demonstrations by aircraft such as the United States Air Force’s F-22Raptor fighter. This is just the second time they have put on a display for the convention.

Some other aircraft that were there for the show were the AirLand Scorpion light attack and surveillance jet from Textron and Universal Avionics CASA CN-235-100 twin-engine transports (which will be used by the Chilean military).
