Every year The U.S. Space & Rocket Center and long-term partner Honeywell hosts over 200 teachers from 25 countries and 36 U.S. states and territories at the HESA (Honeywell Educators at Space Academy) which spans over the course of two consecutive weeks in the month of June. This year the award-winning scholarship program which was created by Honeywell Hometown Solutions in partnership with USSRC hosted six teachers from the Philippines.
The program is designed to help middle school math and science teachers be more effective at teaching the STEM subjects such as science, technology, engineering and math. Since the time of its inception way back in 2004, HESA has helped over 2,576 educators from 56 countries and 52 U.S. states and territories graduate. CEO and Executive Director of the Rocket Center Dr. Deborah Barnhart practically beamed while stating how proud and fortunate they were to be able to partner up with Honeywell to offer this amazing program in order to help teachers and educators from all over the world. Dr. Deborah Barnhart believes that the program provides teachers with the innovative tools they need in order to engage students and lead them to more success in the classroom and ultimately in life. Past educators and teachers who have attended the program swear that
“HESA changed the way they teach and reinvigorated their passion for their work”.
The program consists of 45 hours of classroom, lab work and workshops focusing specifically on science and space exploration. This once in a lifetime experience includes sessions simulating astronaut-style exercises such as interactive flight dynamics programs, high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space missions, and land/water survival training. 2016 Philippine graduate Christoper Ramayla gives his own testimony on how HESA was the best training he’s ever had and how eternally grateful he is for having been blessed with the opportunity to attend. HESA has a rigorous application process and qualified teachers are awarded scholarships, round-trip airfare, tuition, meals and accommodations completely free of charge courtesy of Honeywell and its employees. Honeywell to this date has provided over 3 million students with invaluable teaching techniques as a direct result of the HESA program.
