Huisman: World’s Largest Bearings

The world’s leading specialist in drilling, lifting and subsea solutions provider, Huisman, has just announced that they will be working on producing the world’s largest bearings components. Huisman will begin work on the bearings at their production facility in China. 30 meters in diameter, the bearings are being developed for the world’s largest Tub Cranes which are themselves are being current constructed for Heerema’s new semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir. This was born out of necessity as traditional Tub Cranes use bogies or large wheels for their slew system whereas the Huisman designed cranes are using large bearings of their own design which are all manufactured in-house.

The bearing allows the crane to save substantial amount of weight and since 2012, nobody has been doing it better than Huisman who have been wildly successful at designing and developing bearings with diameter up to 14m. The two bearings being developed for the 10,000mt Sleipnir are segmented and allows for inspection of the rollers without disassembling the bearing which is a huge advantage. Huisman has reported that the first bearing has already been completed at their China location with the assembly of the second bearing to begin soon in March of this fiscal year.
